Sapmi Nature is founded by Lennart Pittja, entrepreneur and Sami from Gällivare, Sápmi/Sweden. Sapmi Nature Camp is a small-scale, personal and sustainable lavvu based glamping*, located in Unesco’s world heritage area Laponia, outside Gällivare and Jokkmokk.

Swedish Nature and Ecotourism Association nominate candidates for the award. In times of increased climate awareness – genuine, sustainable and locally based experiences in Swedish nature are more needed than ever. Inspirational experiences from Sweden’s eco-tourism companies create a strong attractiveness in a global market, which benefits the entire nation’s hospitality industry. But perhaps even more important is that Swedish ecotourism is also a guide to the sustainable development of the industry.

Here is the nomination for Sapmi Nature to the ecotourism prize by Swedish Nature and Ecotourism Association*:

Sápmi Nature Camp is a genuine Sami experience. As a guest, you share the Arctic everyday life for Sweden’s indigenous Sami people in and around UNESCO’s world heritage area Laponia. Preparation of food and cooking, fishing and reindeer herding are mixed with excursions in nature and framed by storytelling and northern lights.

Lennart Pittja, founder of Sapmi Nature was handed the Grand Travel Award on a gala in Stockholm in February:

”I am happy and proud for this award. I am grateful for the efforts by earlier Sámi generations to keep this land. And for the support from my Sami community Unna Tjerusj in the development of Sapmi Nature Camp. I am proud that visitors from different parts of the world come to Sapmi to experience our nature and culture.

This glamping experience is my way to create awareness for the needs of our reindeer and to share knowledge without destroying more of our natural life environment. My guest appreciates the chance to learn more about life here while they experience Sami hospitality and natural phenomena’s like the midnight sun and northern light. That is what ecotourism is all about.”

It is actually the second time that Lennart Pittja win the Grand Travel Award for best Swedish ecotourism – already 2004 his former company Vägvisaren/Pathfinder got the award.

*Wikipedia: Glamping is a portmanteau of glamorous and camping and describes a style of camping with amenities and, in some cases, resort-style services not usually associated with “traditional” camping. Glamping has become particularly popular with 21st-century tourists seeking the luxuries of hotel accommodation alongside the escapism and adventure recreation of camping.
